The town of Blackburn
The town of Blackburn is nestled just north of Liverpool and Manchester. Though the town has a sleepy feel, it has plenty of tourist sights, restaurants and nightlife. Once a textile mill town, Blackburn was home to the famous textile manufacturer, James Hargreaves, who invented the spinning jenny—a spindle used to create yarn. It is the sister town—and a short carbide away—to the nearby town of Darwen.
Local attractions in Blackburn
Blackburn’s cultural scene is rivaled by few other towns in the area. With three different venues to see live music, plays or art performances, King George’s Hall is one of the best places to check out entertainment. The Thwaites Empire Theatre shows top headlining acts and the Darwen Library Theatre shows amateur plays. Locals and visitors alike love paying visits to the town’s cathedral. The gothic structure has 56 panes of stained-glass in its tower. People flock to hear the Walker organ—featuring six choirs that are regularly featured on the BBC. The cathedral also entertains visitors with its 10 bells—rung in the same “full circle” style that was used over 350 years ago. The cathedral also has a gift shop and café. The local Museum and Art Gallery pays tribute to the textile history of Blackburn, and visitors can step back in time to get a glimpse of the town’s past. Restaurants and nightlife are only a short taxi ride from local hotels and bed and breakfasts. Check out a new movie at the local theater or take the kids bowling at the new Bowlplex. Or, grab a bite to eat at one of the many pubs or teahouses.
